TuiNa is a form of massage/ manipulative therapy often conducted in conjunction with acupuncture, herbal medicine and qigong. The name comes from the two Chinese characters 推拿, that means push and hold. It is a hands-on body treatment based on the principles of Tradition Chinese Medicine (TCM), Daoist and martial arts principles to bring the body to balance. The practitioner may brush, knead, roll, press and rub the areas of the body to achieve desired therapeutic effects. For example, to open the body’s defensive (wei) chi and get the energy and circulation moving in both the meridians and the muscles. The practitioner can then use range of motion, massage, and stimulation to treat both acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions, as well as many internal conditions.
